Katsu Curry is a popular Japanese dish which is a combination of Japanese curry and Tonkatsu (breaded deep-fried pork cutlet). Our vegan version is Don Ka Su. Most Katsu curry is filled with MSG and artificial colors. Our version of Katsu curry is prepared with all natural ingredients, never with MSG. Initially, we served it only for weekend lunch specials but due to its popularity and frequent requests, we added it to our dinner specials.

Our Kitchen’s Special – Satay!

IMG_20160816_220525

For those who have dined in with us recently, you might have already tried our kitchen’s special – Satay!

We’ve had such positive feedback from our customers about this special appetizer. We appreciate it very much. Since many of our customers do not know what satay is, we would like to share the basics here with you.

It is believed that the true birthplace of satay is Indonesia. However, satay is so popular that it is now a common street food all over Southeast Asia. It is usually made with meat grilled on a skewer and served with a spiced peanuts sauce.

Our vegan version is made with non-GMO soybean protein, soy fiber, wheat protein, vegetable oil, sea salt and vegetarian seasonings. We use turmeric, lemon grass, curry, pepper, ginger, garlic and scallion to marinate them overnight, and then put them on the skewers.

The other essential ingredient of this recipe is our house-made peanut sauce. While most peanut sauce is made with peanut butter, we make our peanut sauce with real peanuts and we’re sure you’ll taste the difference!

Tom Kar Soup – The Quintessential Thai Soup

It’s a blessing working with our talented friends here at Alice & Friends’ Vegan Kitchen. When you look at our menu, you’ll see some dishes are named after their creators.

The most recent are Thai Limeade, Tom Kar Soup and Satay. They are certainly popular and worth introductions.

Tom Kar Soup is a traditional Thai soup containing a spicy coconut broth, typically simmered with chicken and shrimp chili paste. Patty created this vegan version with coconut milk and lime juice seasoned with lemongrass, galangal, kaffir limeaves, fresh vegetables and cilantro. This is a creamy, sweet and sour flavored soup with a hint of spiciness. Don’t be surprised by the “ginger root” you see inside the soup! This shows you that we are using real ingredients.

The Biggest Rewards

I was aware that a restaurant business is very challenging before I pursued my lifelong dream. Despite tons of objection, I decided to follow that dream, no matter what.

Running a restaurant business requires a lot of work. It’s even more difficult for vegan restaurants. Before I opened Alice & Friends I understood that the key to a vegan restaurant is to make sure all the ingredients are truly vegan. We gather these delicious ingredients and keep them fresh to transform them into flavorful and healthy dishes daily. It’s a lot of work to prep everything in house (some new staff were surprised that we make almost everything from scratch ourselves). It’s a lot of work, indeed, but it’s truly worth it.

What keeps me going? Two things in particular. When a client enjoys our food and knowing that no lives are being sacrificed.

Summer is here! We have many travelers visiting our restaurant lately. Two of them were from Boston. How delightful was to be able to share our vegan stories! One day after they dine-in, we received a nice surprise. A beautiful Phalaenopsis white orchid!

This gift was truly unexpected and a powerful encouragement for our team and myself. We feel very grateful.

This winter, our globe hit an alarming new record: February 2016 ranked as the most unusually warm month ever measured.  The damage we have done to our planet feels irreversible some days. Weather has become more violent, less predictable, coral reefs have been destroyed, and entire species are dying out from lack of land and food.

Friday, April 22 marks the 46th anniversary of Earth Day. Alice and Friends will celebrate green living, sustainability and socially-conscious eating by presenting a little something to loyal customers.  Bring in your reusable containers for your takeout orders or restaurant leftovers and receive a free cupcake! – Not Just on Earth Day – Everyday!

Alice and Friends is proud to support Earth Day.  Let’s continue to celebrate our planet through everyday small and big gestures for a brighter and greener future.

One of our lovely customers showed us a good example!

Spring Specials!

It’s a special Easter weekend and we have something special too.

Agedashi Tofu – a popular Japanese appetizer in a sweet and savory ginger sauce. It is a traditional Japanese tofu dish. Instead of the fish stock that the regular Agedashi Tofu made of, we use our house made mushroom stock. Super healthy and delicious.
